Violent forest and tundra fires have ravaged Sakha Yakutia in Eastern Siberia this July and affected the reindeer herding in a way we do not yet know the extent of. 78 “natural” fires on the republic’s territory have been discovered, and over 659 thousand hectares have been burned.
“I no longer travel in Siberia, but try to keep up with the communities I have worked for more than 30 years. There is great suffering for the individual reindeer herders who are affected”. Says Proffesor Svein D. Mathiesen.
