This report contains an reports of EU-PolarNet 2 workshops/meetings, PolarNet II
Engagements, ICR Deliverables, Arctic Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities,
Coastal Land Degradation, Co-production of Knowledge.
The workshops were organized in Guovdageaidnu, Norway, on 29 – 31 August 2022,
30 November – 1 December 2022, and 15 May 2023 with 200 participants and
coordinated by the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR), Guovdageaidnu
as part of the EU-PolarNet 2 WP co-hosted with GEF, UNEP Reindeer Herding and
Resilience project.
Aim
Four workshops involving local and Indigenous communities in Sápmi were conducted.
These workshops aimed to ensure that the design of future research programs
enhances the production, development, documentation, safeguarding, monitoring,
outreach, and dissemination of diverse Indigenous practices and knowledge systems,
including, but not limited to, traditional knowledge of Sámi peoples.
The workshops aimed at building a bridge between academia and Indigenous
communities so that the adaptation strategies can follow the Arctic realities and bring
in Indigenous knowledge, Sámi reindeer herders’ knowledge, and the local community’s
prioritization to research needs. There is a strong urge to feed these into research
prioritization work conducted by the EU-PolarNet 2 in June 2023 to be further included
in the EU Polar research agenda.
